No. 5,217,527, issued to Sturtevant, is an apparatus for creating a custom piece of jewelry such as a pendant or ring. The apparatus includes a plating basin for holding a liquid coating. A ring stand is mounted to the plating basin and holds a ring to be coated. An anodizing chamber is disposed beneath the plating basin and is provided with a plurality of ceramic rings. Anodizing fluid is applied to the anodizing chamber through a fluid supply line and a plurality of ceramic rings connected thereto, and an electric current is passed between the ceramic rings. The current heats the anodizing fluid and causes it to create an anodized coating on the ceramic rings. The apparatus further includes a vibratory drive mechanism that vibrates the ring stand and the plating basin.
Various other apparatuses for creating a coating on a ring are shown in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,051,082, 5,185,330, and 5,547,359. The patents to Sturtevant show an apparatus for anodizing a ring, wherein the ring is mounted on an annular plating basin that holds an electrolytic anodizing fluid. A ceramic anodizing apparatus is provided beneath the plating basin, and a plurality of ceramic rings are provided in the anodizing apparatus. The anodizing apparatus may be vibrated to aid in the anodizing process.
One drawback of the prior art devices is that they are not intended to be used with a non-anodized ring. In other words, the non-anodized rings are only intended to be placed into the anodizing apparatus, and are not intended to be attached or otherwise held in a fixed position by the apparatus. Thus, a device that is intended for use in anodizing a ring may not be suitable for use in other applications. For example, a non-anodized ring may be intended for normal wear, whereas a jewel ac619d1d87
