The radiation risks associated with CT scans are a major concern for some Iowans. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, health care providers subject patients to more than 70 million CT scans each year.
Iowans take in about 40 million CT scans annually. Experts say the number is expected to grow as the number of CT scans outpace patient-appointments.
While there are numerous benefits to CT scans, they also pose a serious threat to the health of children, pregnant women, cancer patients, and some patients who are immunocompromised.
Some Iowa patients say they receive unnecessary radiation exposure while other Iowans say they are concerned about potential cancer risks.
Dr. Karen Whalen, a pediatrician at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, Missouri, said she is often told her patients will receive too many CT scans.
“We want to give them as much diagnostic information as we can in the shortest amount of time,” she said.
Whalen said some patients do get CT scans unnecessarily.
